Commercial Airport Crash Phone/Net Solution Brief by VoiceInterop
High Level Overview
An international airport needed to replace their outdated crash phone/net solution
because lightning, power outages and telecom circuit failures consistently led to
outages. These issues required airport and local Telco personnel to constantly test
and troubleshoot the crash phone to ensure proper working order. This resulted in
depending on the local Telco for response and taxed valuable airport resources
routinely.
These types of traditional crash phone systems are built on old analog systems with
aging hardware that rely on leased telephone lines, off property connections and
third party providers for maintenance and support. The combination of obsolete
technology and dependence on local Telco's for support fall short of the demanding
requirements for today's busy airports. In addition, traditional crash phone/net
systems are typically incapable of interoperating with disparate devices such as two-
way radios, cell phones, and PCs.
Traditional Technology Hurdles
· Poor Voice Quality - Frequent static and lack of clarity were plaguing operators,
dispatchers and responders due to antiquated copper circuits and off campus
routing of calls.
· Lack of Available Parts - Technicians were spending long hours on
maintenance because certain parts were longer produced and had to be
refurbished and reused.
· Survivable Design A combination of on-campus and off-campus IT/Telecom
requirements was not conducive in building a redundant, self-healing design
including autonomous offline operations, peer-to-peer communications and
automatic failover.
· Scalability The traditional system did not support interoperability with
disparate devices such as IP and cellular phones, two-way and iDEN radio
systems and PCs.
System Limitations
The air traffic control tower personnel were capable of initiating an emergency
call to only a limited number of responding entities. In order to contact additional
responders not connected to the crash phone system or off airport personnel,
